WEED, Siskiyou County — November 5, 2026. Weed’s November 3 City Council election had three full-term seats but only two listed candidates in the county’s latest reported results. Marie Gates-Green had 284 votes and Darrell W. Parham had 249. This is not an ordinary three-way contest: fewer named candidates appear on the ballot than available seats.
RELATED NOVEMBER 6 STORY. Weed voters also considered Measure K, a proposed 1.5-percentage-point local sales tax, with 248 Yes and 154 No reported in the county’s first-night batch. The tax’s Yes/No electorate and the three-seat council election below are distinct questions; no candidate’s support can be inferred from Measure K’s percentages.
Two names for three positions
The count cannot by itself reveal how the unfilled position will be handled. Whether a qualified write-in or a subsequent appointment is used depends on the local legal procedure, official filings and the certified election outcome. Reporting that three candidates were elected would invent a third name not in the known record.
Measure K is a separate election
Weed also voted on Measure K, which shows 274 Yes (62.6%) to 164 No (37.4%) in the county’s Wednesday-afternoon report. The county describes the measure as requiring a majority. The Yes/No total differs from the council candidate selection count, so those figures must be interpreted independently.
Why the legal detail matters
When an election has fewer candidates than seats, residents still deserve a clear explanation of how vacancies or uncontested positions are handled. An election-night results summary alone does not establish who might be appointed, and the newsroom will not imply an appointment has already occurred.
Local representation
The future council will consider city finances, community services, housing and planning. College of the Siskiyous and other public institutions in the area are distinct entities. California58’s existing Weed community reporting offers broader local context.
Source, date and certification
The figures derive from Siskiyou News’s Nov. 5 analysis of the county’s election summary Update #3, which records a reporting timestamp of November 4, 2026 at 3:03 p.m. Pacific. Voters can follow the Siskiyou County Clerk’s official election results for later canvass releases. Eligible additional ballots may change the totals. County official results are due by December 3 and statewide certification by December 11. The figures above are preliminary, not certified.
